Matthew 16:24 What does the cross symbolize?

Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. -Matthew 16:24 Bible, King James Version

Most Christians wear a cross because it symbolizes their Christian Faith. The Mormons do not wear or have any crosses in or on their Churches because they say it was the cross which killed their Saviour Jesus. In the book  Life and Teachings of the Masters of the Far East by Baird T Spalding we read I believe Jesus teaching about the origin of the cross: "The cross was, in the beginning, the symbol of the greatest joy the world ever knew... If you will trace it back, you will find that the cross disappears entirely and that it is the man standing in the attitude of devotion, standing in space with arms upraised in blessing... pouring all his gifts forth freely in every direction."
