In the theological works of Emanuel Swedenborg, particularly his landmark 1758 book Heaven and Hell, heaven is frequently described as appearing on mountains and hills.
Mountains (The Highest Elevation): Represent the highest or Celestial heaven. Those who live on mountains are in the highest state of love to the Lord. This is an inward, deeply felt love that perceives divine truth instantly.
Hills (The Intermediate Elevation): Represent the middle or Spiritual heaven. Those who inhabit the hills are in a state of love toward their neighbor (charity) and find their primary joy in spiritual truths and performing useful services.
Plains and Valleys (The Lower Elevations): Represent the lowest or Natural heaven, populated by those who live good lives out of obedience rather than deep spiritual perception.
